Here are some symptoms of problem water.

ALKALINITY

SYMPTOMS – Scaling of pipes and fixtures, bitter, acrid, or “soda” tasting drinking water, and excessive drying of the skin. SOURCE – Bicarbonates are the most common sources of alkalinity, however, significant concentrations of hydroxides and carbonates are also an occasional cause. SOLUTIONS – For single “point of use” correction, a Reverse Osmosis Purifier will eliminate most minerals, including those that cause high alkalinity. For total household correction it is sometimes possible to add anion resin to the cation resin in a softener, or in a separate unit , to exchange the carbonates, bicarbonates and sulfates, for chloride ions.

BACTERIA

SYMPTOMS – Bacteria, virus, and spores, and most microorganisms that contaminate are 2 micron or smaller. The human eye can only see as small as 40 micron. Therefore contamination can only be determined by proper testing, and this determination can only is the sole province of the local or state government, and they eventually must follow the standards of the federal government. Therefore, every private water source should be tested. Usually your county will provide this service, FREE. SOURCE – Bacteria exists almost everywhere, and most of it is doing good things, or at the very least it is harmless. Bacteria digests your food, cleans up oil spills, and most important, in the form of yeast, ferments grains into beer. Then there is coli form Bacteria. Although harmless in itself, because it grows only in the digestive tract of warm blooded animals, it acts as a warning signal of contamination.3SOLUTION – The only universally accepted method for destroying bacteria etc., and rendering water “potable” or safe for human consumption is chlorination. This requires injecting sufficient chlorine to “kill” the contaminants, with a minimum of 20 minutes of contact time.

The water is then run through a filter to remove any contaminants that have been precipitated by the chlorine. The result is clean, potable, iron and sulphur free water.

 

COLOR ( Iron, Tannins, Organics )

SYMPTOMS – Unlike most other water problems, offensive odors are obvious. The type of odor will determine the type of correction.

SOURCE – Sewer smells indicate algae or bacteria, rotten egg smells indicate sulphur iron causes iron odors and musty smells are derived from many sources.

SOLUTIONS – Chlorination will correct several odor problems, including iron, sulphur and bacteria. For Ferrous Iron, (invisible iron in the water) a softener will remove up to .02 ppm. Ferric Iron (visible in water) requires an iron filter, which will also remove a small quantity of sulphur. Activated Carbon will remove almost all types of odors but is economically feasible for small trace quantities. Activated Carbon is a very economical method to eliminate offensive tastes and odors in all drinking water.

 

BAD ODORS

SYMPTOMS – Unlike most other water problems, offensive odors are obvious. The type of odor will determine the type of correction. SYMPTOMS – Like odors, bad taste is measured by one of the human senses, the nose. SOURCE – Iron tastes are from iron. A bitter taste can be caused by low or high pH. Sometimes sulphur will cause a rotten egg taste, and other tastes can be caused by bad plumbing. SOLUTIONS – Chlorination will correct several problems, including iron, sulphur and bacteria. For Ferrous iron, a softener is usually a good choice. Ferric iron requires an iron filter which will also remove small quantities of sulphur. Activated Carbon will remove almost all types of tastes but is economical only for trace amounts. Activated Carbon is a very economical method to eliminate offensive tastes and odors in drinking water. It is the natural choice when treating a single source of drinking water. Economical to install and very economical to maintain

FERROUS IRON

Symptoms: - Ferrous iron is sometimes referred to “clear water iron”. Therefore it is stealth until exposed to oxygen then it stains clothes, fictures, and anything else.

Source: - Iron is a natural mineral found in almost all locations in the united states. Surface water usually has only trace amounts. Ground water can contain up to 90 ppm of a combination of all types of iron.

Solutions: because ferrous iron is usually found is smaller quantities, it can usually be removed by a water softener, as a byproduct of removing hardness. It will also be removed if a chlorination system or an iron filter is installed for another.

FERRIC IRON

Symptoms: - Ferric iron is sometimes referred to “red water iron” .Therefore it is easily identified by an orange or red color. Source: - Iron is a natural mineral found in almost all locations of the United States. Almost all ground water contains iron, and as the quantity increases so do the chances of finding ferric iron.

Solutions:- Because ferric iron is visible it can not be removed by a water softener. The proper piece of equipment is an iron filter specifically designed for mineral removal.

Low pH

Symptoms:- Major symptoms are corrosion and etching of pipes and plumbing fixtures. Unfortunately then the damage is done , so all water should be tested before the source is first used. The corrosion can etch heavy metals into drinking water.
